The method
Step by step.
- Pick a photograph with a clear tonal challenge. Chrome against dark bodywork, pale grass against trees, or mist behind a ridge makes differences easier to see.
- Compare the neutral rendering with two Profiles. Look at subject separation and highlight roll-off rather than choosing only by a film name.
- Adjust Light after choosing the response. If the picture becomes too harsh, reconsider the look before compensating with many other controls.
- Use a local mask for the subject instead of increasing global contrast to solve a small area. Inspect the transition so the edit does not look cut out.
- Add grain only after the image has a coherent tonal structure. Inspect at 100% and at the final display size: a pleasing texture on screen can become distracting in a small export.
- Save a reusable preset for the overall treatment and a snapshot for the individual photograph. Recheck exposure when applying the treatment to another scene.
